Flames of glass and an oversized glass snowflake surprise the visitors who land on Murano. Forget the crowds that daily put St Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge and other landmarks under siege and immediately visit the famous Glass Museum hosted in the outstanding Palazzo Giustinian, the former bishop’s residence. See 1000 years of glass production, and learn the innumerable tecniques the Muranese glassmasters experimented over the centuries. Only then you’ll be ready to visit a glass blowing factory to see the making of their glass creation. For many centuries a summer resort for the rich Venetian aristocracy, Murano’s palazzi still show traces of their glorious past. The outstanding glass and stone mosaics inside the Church of Santi Maria e Donato, the breathtaking Giovanni Bellini’s painting in the Church of San Pietro Martire and the nice little and affordable restaurants along its canals alone are undoubtedly worth the trip.
